Shapeshifters Theatre presents the first of its new Staged Readings Series on Monday, September 14 in the Fifth Province. Readings will be the first Monday of most months. (Note: September is the 2nd week, due to Labor Day)
Kicking off the series will be the black comedy, "The Beauty Queen of Leenane", the first in the Leenane Trilogy by Tony Award nominee and Academy Award-winning writer Martin McDonagh. The Fifth Province opens at 6 pm, and the reading begins at 7 pm. The audience is invited to stay after the reading for a talk back with director Robert Ayres and the cast. Live music before and after the performance will be provided by Patrick Cannady on uilleann pipes, Karen Cook Cannady on fiddle and Donald Terao on guitar and bouzouki.
"Beauty Queen" tells the story of the dysfunctional relationship between a lonely woman, facing her first and possibly last chance at love, and her domineering mother, intent on derailing the course of true love. The 1998 Broadway production was nominated for six Tony Awards and won four: Best Leading Actress in a Play, Best Featured Actor in a Play, Best Featured Actress in a Play and Best Direction of a Play.
The second and third plays in the trilogy, "A Skull in Connemara" and "The Lonesome West", will be performed on Monday, October 5 and Monday, November 2.
Tickets for the reading are $10 and can be purchased by visiting www.irish-american.org calling 773-282-7035, ext. 10 or at the door.
